DAY OF IMMUNOLOGY
April 29, 2025
Day of Immunology at the UKE: A Look Inside the World of the Immune System
On April 29, immunology takes center stage around the world: The Day of Immunology, initiated by the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS), highlights the vital role our immune system plays in health and well-being. The goal is to raise public awareness of the importance of immunological research.
The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is planning the an engaging afternoon program on its campus.
From 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, all those interested are warmly invited to visit the foyer of the Hamburg Center for Translational Immunology (HCTI) , Building N25, for a “short afternoon of science” showcasing current research in immunology.
At informative posters and display stands, the PhD students of the Hamburg school of Infection & Immunity together with representatives of our research units will offer insights into their work—from the fundamentals of immune defense to innovative therapeutic approaches for immune-mediated diseases.
A special highlight of the day is the public lecture by Prof. Dr. Manuel Friese, Director of the Institute of Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis: “Multiple Sclerosis: Where Does This Neuroimmunological Disease Come From and How Will It Be Treated in the Future?”
The lecture will take place from 3:00 PM to approximately 3:45/4:00 PM in the Ian-Karan-Lecture Hall (Building N55).
Everyone is welcome - whether you have a medical background or simply a curiosity about the human immune system!

HCTI Monday Seminar - Opening Lecture
The HCTI Monday Seminar Series started on February 10 with a guest speaker, Prof. Dr. Reinhold Förster from the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover.
Titel of the Seminar:
“Integrative deep profiling of the human immune system reveals systems-level signatures of aging, sex, smoking, clinical traits, and vaccination.”
Professor Förster and his research group investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the functional organization of lymphoid organs. His groundbreaking research provides critical insights into how various factors shape immune system function at a systemic level.
This event was organized in cooperation with the
Hamburg Center for Translationa Immunology (HCTI)
and the
C3i Center for Inflammation, Infection and Immunity.

Welcome to the PhD Students Class of 2024 at the Hamburg School of Infection & Immunity
We are pleased to welcome the PhD students of the Class of 2024 to the Hamburg School of Infection & Immunity. This year, 12 students from Germany, Cyprus, China, and India have joined our School, bringing a range of research interests and expertise to the program. 36 students are currently enrolled in the HSII.
The Kick-Off event on November 19 provided an opportunity for each student to introduce themselves and share their research topics. We also welcomed Prof. Dr. Daniel Engel, Chairman of the Department of Immunodynamics at the Medical Research Centre, University Hospital Essen, as a guest lecturer.
We look forward to supporting this group of students as they begin their doctoral studies and contribute to the ongoing work at the School!
